Since it's founding, the physicians, nurses and staff of Elizabeth General cared for patients suffering from mental health issues. An early unit cared for suffers of depression and delirium tremors.
In 1933, the hospital established the first hospital-based mental health unit east of the Mississippi. This continued care grew to include the area's first Community Mental Health Center which was established in 1972.
Since then, the hospital's commitment grew to include the state's first inpatient behavioral health units for adults and children. The state also looked to Elizabeth General to put in place the first and only dually-diagnosed unit for behavioral patients suffering from substance addiction.
Today, under RWJBarnabas Health/Trinitas, the service remains one the largest and most comprehensive behavioral health departments in New Jersey. It is housed in the hospital's New Point Campus, formerly the site of the Alexian Brothers Hospital.
