People: Nursing School Graduating Class Photos

Working backwards through the years, here are graduation photos from the Elizabeth General Medical Center School of Nursing, the Elizabeth General Hospital School of Nursing and the Elizabeth General Hospital and Dispensary School of Nursing.

From its inception, the Elizabeth General placed an emphasis on nursing education so that the hospital could fulfill its staffing needs, other hospitals both locally and throughout the US could hire nurses whose training was always first-class and first-rate. Graduates of the school went on to excel in their individual careers and many have gone on to receive advanced degrees in nursing.

There were many people in the community who worked tirelessly to provide the school with facilities, housing, equipment and superb educators that helped make the school a special place where women came to study and advance in a career that helped thousands of patients and provided a solid career path for many. In time, men also found nursing an interesting career path and the school welcomed them on their journey.

The originals of the photos on these pages can be found at the Elizabeth Public Library's Local History Department. Some photos are not available at this time because they were not part of the collection that was donated to the Library.
