For nearly 50 years, Dr. James S Green, Jr. was one of Elizabeth’s leading surgeons and enjoyed a statewide reputation for excellence. The son of Elizabeth General Hospital founder James S. Green, Sr., he worked to carry on his father's legacy, serve the people of Elizabeth, and to continue the growth of Elizabeth General Hospital and Dispensary into the 20th Century. Upon his death, the hospital named a major clinic for cancer care the James S. Green Memorial Tumor Clinic. The Green Clinic grew to become a regional leader in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. In addition to leading county and state medical associations, Dr. Green also served for many years as President of Elizabeth General’s Clinical Society. He described the Hospital as one of his “greatest vehicles for service to mankind.“
